Middlebury College Library

With a history spanning across more than two centuries, Middlebury College is a unique institution, among the most highly regarded liberal arts colleges, with a reach extending from our main campus in Vermont's Champlain Valley to specialized and graduate programs located around the world.

Special Collections and Archives at the Middlebury College Library serves as a research laboratory for both the Middlebury community and independent scholars.  We welcome researchers to explore our collections of rare books, archives, manuscripts, photographs, audio and video recordings, and other rare and unique materials that tell the story of our collective past.

Our collections are broad in scope and cover a variety of media and realia.  As part of our firm commitment to open research and scholarship, we are dedicated to sharing digitized and born-digital archival materials in our collections to whatever extent practicable, and are excited to present these items from our collections via the Internet Archive.

One of the nation's great archival collections of New England folksong, folklore, and balladry, the Flanders Ballad Collection was the lifework of Helen Hartness Flanders (1890-1972), of Springfield, Vermont.  Over the course of thirty years, and with the assistance of Marguerite Olney, Flanders gathered and preserved more than 4,800 field recordings of New England folksongs and ballads as sung by native Vermonters and other New Englanders. In May, 1941, she donated the collection to...

World War II had a distinct impact on Middlebury generally, but specifically on the Football Team. The 1946 team was chosen from only 125 men, and most of them were Navy men who could only practice after supper and on Saturday. Only four games were played that season, we won one, one was a tie, and we lost two. The football program made a big comeback in 1947. Walter "Duke" Nelson, Middlebury class of 1932, came back to his alma mater in 1946 as coach of football. From the record...

Considered the forerunner of all the Middlebury Language Schools in 1915, the German School established its home in Bristol, Vermont and flourished under the direction of the dynamic Ernst Feise throughout the 1930s and 1940s. The seven-week program strove for students to live and work in an atmosphere as distinctly German as if they were traveling in Germany. Integral to that goal was learning to perform dances native to German culture, wearing native German dress. We love the people watching...

Dating back to at least the 1920s as part of Class Day activities before commencement, Middlebury graduates once gathered to take a few puffs on long white pipes to celebrate their big day. In this clip from the 1930s, various lab exercises for a comparative anatomy class are demonstrated, including the careful study of amphibian and human organ models, diligent vertebrae counting on skeletal mounts, and the dissection of a preserved cat -a process which was unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your enthusiasm for biology) recorded out of focus. Luckily, 16 mm film, common from the 1920s through the 1960s, is relatively durable stuff. This particular reel of film, which sat in the Middlebury College archives for over forty years, depicts Robert Frost for two glorious, full color minutes. For the first time in nearly half a century (thanks to a film preservation lab in Philadelphia), watch as Frost harvests vegetables from his garden at his Ripton, Vermont cabin (down the road from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference), frolics with his...

Today, when we look back at this film from the middle of the last century, we think life looks quite formal. But for the students and faculty going about their daily lives at that time, it was perfectly natural, even expected, for Middlebury women to wear dresses and hats, and for Middlebury's men to don suits and ties. The start of the film clip features a dinner party at The Homestead, located on Weybridge Street. Clara B. Knapp, Professor of Home Economics, is seated at the head of the...

We were surprised to find this film of the 1938 flood in East Middlebury, Vermont in the College Archives. The fact that College film-makers ventured off campus indicates what an incredible disaster the flood was. This footage is one of many undated and unlabeled film clips recently discovered in the Archives. Although it's possible that some of these scenes were shot elsewhere, several of the buildings caught on film are still standing in East Middlebury. Based on the vintage of the cars, we...
